Facebook chief Zuckerberg defends privacy stance, regrets some activities

FACEBOOK'S chief executive Mark Zuckerberg defended the company's privacy practices and expressed regret for some of his behaviour during the company's early history, speaking at the Wall Street Journal's All Things Digital technology conference yesterday.

As expected, Facebook's privacy controls and the CEO Mark Zuckerberg's views on privacy figured prominently in his Wednesday appearance at D8.

In an on-stage interview, Mr Zuckerberg continued his recent campaign to address criticism that the social network doesn't give customers proper controls over their data—criticism it moved to address by offering some simplified controls last week. Mr. Zuckerberg said a team of engineers worked non-stop for two weeks to develop the controls. He added the company is doing a "reasonable job" of giving customers control over their privacy on the social network.

The 26-year-old chief executive also addressed the personal scrutiny he has faced, including embarrassing instant-messaging conversations from the time he was starting the company in his Harvard dorm room. "When I was 18 or 19 years old I did some things that were pretty stupid," he said.

Mr. Zuckerberg began to sweat under the glare of spotlights during the wide-ranging conversation, leading him to doff his signature hoodie and revealing a company logo emblazoned on the inside.

His appearance came as news articles and books about Facebook have publicised details about the company's early history, including stories about Mr Zuckerberg facing disciplinary action for hacking into college computers. He did not indicate which stories were true, but said he regrets some episodes.

A film about the company's founding is expected out this year. Mr. Zuckerberg said he would prefer no film be made about his life during his lifetime.

Facebook is approaching 500 million users, he said, growth that has fuelled investor speculation about the possibility the company will go public. Asked if he would remain CEO after the company goes public, Mr Zuckerberg said yes, but added that he didn't know when that might be.

Mr. Zuckerberg reiterated his excitement about several new products Facebook has announced, including a controversial service that allows third-party websites to show users information about their Facebook friends. While the service, called "instant personalisation," is in a very limited test, it has drawn criticism from privacy advocates who argue that it operates behind users' backs.

He said that he thinks eventually all websites will offer similar personalisation. "A few years from now we'll look back and wonder why there was this time when all these websites weren't personalised," he said. "The world is moving in this direction where everything is designed around people."

He also said that he sees lots of potential for the company to innovate around search, stating that the social network fields search queries on a similar scale as industry giant.

argumantative essay-television-draft 1

Television program is a tool that was designed to demand undivided attention(Alexander 2001).An estimation show that 90% of household in developed countries have at least one television set (Sharif 1999).So,it can be said that almost everyone can watch television at home.Statistic shows that watching television have been the highest time taker for leisure and sports activities time (American time use survey 2003).This means television have really big influence on it's viewer.Debated have occur whether television programs brings positive or negative effects. For me,television give more negative effects towards human.

First, watching unsuitable program can caused affects on development of thinking process(Sharif 1999).Especially when children watch it alone without guidance from the elder.Children are at a process to shape their mind about world(Sharif 1999).Watching programs that contains violence, may caused children to think violence is part of life and it is an alternative way to solve problems(Sharif 1999).Watching too much programs that present short but attractive segment can caused tendency for children to have a very short attention towards something(Sharif 1999).

Apart from influencing children mind, television program can also influenced children behavior.Imitating character can lead to poor behavior(Sharif 1999).All these stretotypes influence children in their behavior towards themselves and others(Sharif 1999).Children,who is actually learning how to solve problems, might be fooled by a television programs who solved the problem within 30 minutes. They might have a thinking that all problems can be solved easily(Sharif 1999).But,when it comes to the real life, they might become frustated and give up easily when they fails to solve problems(Sharif 1999).

Next on the list about negative effects of television program is it can caused difficulty in communication among family members(Rutherford 2002).This happen when the family have their meals in front of television. Some of the fanatic viewers of television programs might suffer withdrawal symptoms when they did not watch their favorite progams(Rutherford 2002).Watch television can be harmful if it is watched with an exclusion of other activities. When is indulged with snacks,it may caused obesity and related disease(Rutherfor 2002).

In a nut shell,I strongly believe that watching television have negative effects like behavior problems, thinking problems, communication problems and health problems. So,its better for us to watch less television program and do more activities.

junk food-final draft

Junk food is defined as food that is unhealthy and have low nutritional value(Family Joural 2005).Junk food have been related to many problems like health and behaviour. The problems seems more serious among the teenagers. Statistic shows that most of the foods consumed at home by 12-14 years old Australian Children consist a lot of fat and sugar more than recommended intake (Australian Nutrition Journal 2004).Teenagers usually get their junk food from school canteen. So,an issue have arise whether the selling of junk food should be banned or not?I absolutely agree it should be banned as it caused health problem, triggers behavioural problem and leads to litter problem.

One of the reason is that Junk food caused health problems. It contains a lot of fat, salt and sugar(Family Journal 2005).All this ingredients can cause obesity.Another ingredient in junk food that is found to be a threat is chemical addictives. Most of this substances can cause behavioural problems like hyperactive and poor concentration(Family Journal 2005).In addition, childhood obesity can lead to future cases of heart disease, osteoarthtitis and some cancers.

Students that have large proportion of junk food in their food intake will not managed to get nutrients they need for healthy developement and growth, and thus their learning potential is reduced(Caputo 2005).More worsen to this fact is most youngster nowadays have less participate in physical activities.Statistic show 18% of Australian school students never involved in physical activities and 40& only involves in weekend(Weekend News 2005).This will also lead to a health problems as been stated earlier.

Next, fast food packaging is the majority contribution to litter problems(Family Journal 2005).If sells of junk food is banned school groundsmen does not have to spend so long cleaning the grounds and thus they can concentrate on maintanence project which benefit the school itself(Green 2005).Also,the litter from junk food have caused the cleaning cost to increase also it reflects a bad image of the community.

In a nut shell,I strongly believed that the selling of junk food should be banned as this step can help to reduce many problems like health, behaviour and litter.Students can improve their self and also the environment if they can cut down their in take on junk food.

global warming.second draft

Global warming is currently is a rising issue in world wide.It is actually caused by human being itself.Factories and cars have release all the dangerous gaseous into the atmosphere for the past decades. This caused the temperature to raise between 0.6°C and 0.9°C for the past century.Besides rising in temperature there are also other consequences caused by the global warming.

One of it is the melting of ice caps and glasier. This is due to the high temperature. When the ice melt it will lead to the rising of sea level. This will cause flood to occur more frequent at the coastal area. This is very dangerous as almost 10 percent of the world population lived in coastal areas less than 10 meter above the sea level. The rate of melting of the ice is predicted to be higher every year as the temperature kept rising. This will cause the sea level to raise faster.Flood also occur as a result from the storm raining that kept falling.
According to “Al Gore 2000” global warming not only caused flood,it also caused drought to the neighbouring places. This happen cause global warming not only causing the increasing in precipitation but also relocate the precipitation. The worse continent that faces drought due to the relocation is Africa. There is lack of rainfall in Africa because it was relocate by the global warming. One of the biggest lake in Africa which is Chad had dried to almost nothing. And this makes the lives of the African more difficult.

Next, global warming also putting pressure in ecosystems. For instance growing season in whole world have been shifted by the warmer temperature. The growing season have become longer, and thus the plants need more water or otherwise it will dried up and risk causing fire. Most of the species will migrate to the poles as the temperature at their original places are not suitable for them anymore.Species that cannot migrate will face extinction. The IPCC estimates that 20-30 percent of plant and animal species will be at risk of extinction if temperatures climb more than 1.5° to 2.5°C.

Also many infectious disease may spread. Some city were build just above the mosquito line. But because of the global warming, the line have rise and caused the city were attacked by the mosquitoes. Not only mosquito but there were many types of other vector were manage to live as the they were actually killed by the winter but the shortening of winter have caused them to live.In the last quarter century, almost 30 new diseases were found. All this were actually caused by the global warming.
In the sea,the sea coral is bleaching. Many types of fishes and other seas animal depends on this coral for food.If the coral bleach, the fish species will extinct. This will also caused imbalance in the seas ecosystem.

Mankind is the only species in this world who could solve global warming problem.A few ways is been suggested by Al Gore.Used more efficient electrical appliances, used higher milage car and more efficient public transports is all stated by Al Gore.Another few ways in reducing the carbon dioxide emission which will help to reduce the global warming problems are replacing the incandescent lamps (ones that make light by getting hot) and use energy-saving fluorescent lamps, switching utility company so more of electricity is made from renewable energy or cycling, walking, or take the bus from time to time instead of using car(2006,Woodford).In a nut shell, human must take action from now or otherwise our mother earth will be destroy by immortal enemy which is a natural disaster.

What are the potential effects of global warming in terms of climate change and how can they be arrested?

Global warming is currently is a rising issue in world wide.It is actually caused by human being itself.Factories and cars have release all the dangerous gaseous into the atmosphere for the past decades. There is a many ways mankind can help reducing the global warming. For example use more efficient electric appliances, use renewable source of energy and car pooling. All this may reduce the global warming by small percentage when only one human did but if everyone did it,it can reduce the carbon emission level by quite large percentage.(Al Gore 2000.)

Plan for cricket World Cup to take place in Australia

CRICKETERS will receive the highly anticipated security report on the Indian Premier League in Sydney today amid reports there are contingency plans to move next year's World Cup from the subcontinent to Australia or New Zealand.
There are grave fears following terrorist threats from an Al-Qa'ida sub-group aimed at foreigners attending the Twenty20 tournament, the hockey world cup and the Commonwealth Games.
Indian cricket officials have, however, ruled out transferring the IPL to South Africa as they did last year over security problems.
Australian security expert Reg Dickason delivered his report to the various player bodies late last week and it is understood it says the terrorist threats are credible.
Australian Cricket Association chief executive Paul Marsh will explain the report to the players today.
Head of the Federation of International Cricketers Associations, Tim May, said yesterday players were unsure about playing in the IPL, despite the fact many will receive large amounts to do so.
"The gut feeling from us is that certainly there are a significant number of players who are contemplating whether they should tour India at the moment as part of this IPL tournament or not," May told ABC radio.
The FICA head said the report indicated the threats from the 313 Brigade are being taken seriously despite conflicting analysis that they are not credible.
"They are credible and I don't think there are too many people that will oppose that position," May said.
"But you know, the threats are threats and there are various security procedures and arrangements or whatever that may be able to dilute to an acceptable level those sort of threats.
"And that is what we are trying to gain at the moment - some confidence in the security arrangements around those particular threats."
South Africa played India in a one-day match at Jaipur on Sunday despite local police claiming there were threats against the event. Indian authorities instituted what May called "unprecedented" security for the game and the IPL will be attempting to prove that it can provide the same level of protection.
But the issue is exacerbated by the refusal of Indian cricket officials to deal with any of the player bodies.
May said the IPL had a number of significant security challenges.
"You basically are dealing with eight or 10 or 12 different police forces etc (which) makes it so much more complicated for cricket and so much more problematic," he said.
IPL vice chairman Niranjan Shah dismissed suggestions the IPL could be moved out of India.
"There's no chance it will be moved. It will be played in India, no doubt about it," Mr Shah told The Australian yesterday.
"The safety of the players is paramount and already the government has given its assurance that all the security will be taken care of.
"If an individual does not want to play that is their choice. We understand the cricketers' concerns but we all the time keep in touch with the (cricket) boards directly and give them assurances."
Meanwhile, reports from New Zealand Cricket chief executive Justin Vaughan indicated yesterday that there were plans to move next year's ICC World Cup from India to Australia and/or New Zealand if the security situation declined.
"You cannot move the timing of the tournament, in March-April, so really there's only Australia, New Zealand and South Africa who could host it," he said.
"By tightening the security measures around the teams we somehow have to make it safe otherwise the sport will struggle to survive if we cannot find a solution."
However, ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat insisted world cricket would do everything possible to keep the game going in India and not let it be derailed by terrorism, as has happened in Pakistan.
"The World Cup is the big piece of work that we have to deliver and we intend to do so," Lorgat said.
"The whole issue of security is dynamic, but we will assess it very carefully and implement whatever measures are necessary to ensure safety and security. I do not share the same concerns for India as Pakistan."

summary:

There have been a plan to change the next year's Cricket World Cup from India to Australia or New Zealand. It is because India had been treat by the terrorist. The terrorist treats are credible according to Australian security expert. And because of that most player are reluctant to play in India Premier League(IPL) although the payment are high. There is also a rumour that IPL will be played in South Africa but IPL vice chairman denied that speculation.Meanwhile the New Zealand Cricket chief executive said the World Cup can still be played at India but with one condition which is the safety of the players are assured.

Critics:

This article is mainly about the Cricket World Cup next year and the Indian Premier League(IPL).Both of the event were scheduled to be played at India but Australian and New Zealand are not agree with it as India is currently under the terrorist treat.Australia have requested the world cup to be held at their place. While New Zealand are willing to play at India but they want their player's safety is assured. There is also a voice from the Indian side saying that the will do everything possible to make sure the world cup will be held in India and not let it be derailed by the terrorism as happen in Pakistan. So,in my opinion the security have to be tightened in India. There are so many cases sports players been attacked by the terrorist. All the security and sports governing body have to take a precautionary step in order to prevent this thing from happen. Its such an ashamed for a country when other people come to their country and being attacked. So,goverment, security and sports governing body have to work together to solve this problem.
